Architecture has always served a purpose beyond shelter; it is uniquely human, a projection of ambition, thought, and imagination. Some buildings conquer with bitter practicality, others embrace whimsical creativity pushing the boundaries of normality, and a few even transport us to places that feel like dreams.
Archimagination— where architecture meets creativity, and the impossible is maybe possible.
We are going to explore some of the wildest ideas about architecture— fantasy designs from movies and games, lofty concepts for extraterrestrial life appreciation and underwater cities, architecture as a function of art, and a thousand or so “what if” scenarios for your consideration. Hop on, it should be a fun ride with plenty of fun facts and big ideas.
🎥 Fantasy Architecture: Worlds You Wish Were Real
The most breathtaking buildings of all time aren’t even real – but they could be if we wanted them to be! Fantasy architecture in movies and games is completely imaginary. Where artists and designers throw out the rule book and say, “let’s build something people have never seen before”.
🏰 Hogwarts (Harry Potter)
Alright, who doesn’t love Hogwarts? But did you realize that the moving staircases, hidden doors, and magical vibe are all inspired by real-life castles in Scotland and England? The castle of Alnwick brings to the imagination the power of ancient structures together with something mystical in a way that makes actual historical places feel alive, with their own personality – who says buildings can’t be dependent on their designs?
Fun Fact: The filmmakers threw in a whole bunch of extra towers and bridges digitally to make Hogwarts appear more complex than it would have been. Can you imagine being the wizard who got lost there on the first day?
🌿 Rivendell (The Lord of the Rings)
Rivendell is an elf’s Pinterest board come to life. The fluidity of the archways, flowing water, and seamlessness with the surrounding ecology make Rivendell seem like a fantasy. The designers of the films did their research, using Art Nouveau (like Gaudí) as a basis to create designs that incorporated Tolkien’s love for nature.
Fun Fact: Rivendell was created as a miniature (albeit 13 feet long) before the final digital rendering was undertaken in the films. Total commitment!
🌃 Midgar (Final Fantasy VII)
On the darker side of fantasy, we have Midgar, the industrial city from Final Fantasy VII. It is more than a place; it is a statement. The upper levels of the city, where rich people stay, cast a literal shadow over the slum-like lower levels. It is a sobering reminder of how design can mean something and provide depth to issues of society as well.
Fun Fact: Midgar is based on the look of industrial towns, such as Manchester during its Industrial Revolution, with some dystopian sci-fi elements.
🚀 Speculative Architecture: Mars, Oceans, and Beyond
What about speculation, which is even cooler! The imagination of scientists, engineers, and dreamers is looking to the question, “What happens next for humanity?”
🌌 Living on Mars
Mars is literally Earth’s dangerous, red twin. If we want to colonize Mars, we need a building that can withstand extreme cold, no atmosphere, and radiation exposure. Sounds straightforward enough!
Mars Ice House – This concept uses 3D-printed methods with ice to create habitats that would protect against radiation exposure. Surprisingly enough, ice has considerable insulating properties and looks cool!
SpaceX Domes – Although most of us are familiar with the extraordinary ideas of Elon Musk, he predicts solar-powered glass domes will be our first dwellings on Mars, proceeding eventually to self-sustaining cities once we develop the terraform skills (futuristic – very!)
Fun fact: Mars has Olympus Mons, the tallest volcano in the solar system, which is more than three times taller than Mount Everest (just imagine the view over the region from that Airbnb!).
🌊 Underwater Cities
If Mars feels a bit too far out there, how about a trip underwater? With rising sea levels, this could feel even less like an option and more like a requirement one day.
Ocean Spiral: A concept city by Shimizu Corporation; it begins at the ocean surface and spirals to the ocean floor. Ocean Spiral would create its own power, produce food, and could house thousands of people.
Sub-Biosphere 2: A “massive underwater bubble” system replicating Earth’s various ecosystems. It does not just include humans, but plants and marine ecology as well.
Fun fact: It’s estimated that humans have only explored 5% of the oceans, so building underwater may actually give us insight into our own planet. Plus, who wouldn’t want to live in a real-life Atlantis?antis?
🎨 Architecture as Art: When Buildings Become Masterpieces
Sometimes architecture is not practical; sometimes buildings are statements, and these buildings are products of design that are as expressive and change making as a painting or sculpture.
🌀 Sagrada Família (Barcelona, Spain)
Antoni Gaudí’s design for The Sagrada Família looks like it was taken from a dream. Towering spires, colourful stained glass, tree-like columns; it is a cathedral, art piece, and certainly a conversation starter.
Fun fact: The Sagrada Família has been under construction for more than 140 years and is still “not finished”! Gaudí famously said, “My client is not in a hurry.” (Referring to God)
🏞️ Fallingwater (Pennsylvania, USA)
Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater epitomizes the symbiosis of architecture and nature, it is built on top of a waterfall and located in the landscape.
Fun fact: Frank Wright designed Fallingwater in just a couple of hours after procrastinating for weeks (there is hope for all you procrastinators!!).
🛡️ The Guggenheim Museum (Bilbao, Spain)
Frank Gehry’s dynamic and shimmering intention to see Bilbao as an arts locality is recognized with the design of the Bilbao Guggenheim. It is not just a museum from Spain or a place to visit; it is a work of modernist sculpture that people from all over the world travel to see.
Fun fact: The Guggenheim has titanium panels that require no maintenance and are self-cleaning due to the smooth panel surface and ample rainy weather in Bilbao.
🌀 The Power of Archimagination
What’s the purpose of all of these eccentric, odd, and extraordinary designs? They engage in larger thinking. Be it a fantastical castle, a futuristic hypothetical Mars colony, or a surreal building like these monumental pieces that are pure art, wonder, and possibilities happen when we let our imagination run wild.
So next time you keep walking and walk past “that” building, stop for a moment and look again. Maybe all they created was not all that different from a stack of bricks and mortar, but was a future of someone’s dreams.
Who knows, maybe one day you are the one who constitutes the unique ideas that shape the skyline of Earth, Mars, or even the built environment of the unknown waters.
